XANANA ASKED TO BE PRESENT IN DILI COURT AS WITNESS

DILI (MateBEAN, 17/3/98), Constancio Costa do Santos, 21, who stands for trial and accused of smuggling bombs and ammunition to East Timor, asked the Court to invite Xanana Gusmao as witness. Constancio gave a testimony that all his works were ordered directly by Xanana as his Falintil Supreme Commander. "Only Xanana who is able to answer all your questions," said Constancio to the team of Judges and Prosecutor.

He refused to answer all questions by placing his crossed two fingers on his mouth.

Security officers arrested Constancio on 15 August 1997 after he disembarked from a ship in Dili harbour, following an explosion of bomb in an East Timorese rented house in Demak, Central Java. Two of his friends, husband and wife, are seeking political asylum in Austrian Embassy, Jakarta. The two is still in the embassy because the Indonesian government asked the Austrians to hand-over the East-Timorese considering they are not political refugees but criminals.

Dili State Court had never granted Constancio's plea to invite Xanana as a witness. The Court predicted, thousands of East-Timorese would enthusiastically hail the FALINTIL leader. The bearded Commandante Xanana is still a hero in the hearts of East-Timorese rather than the Indonesian Government's consideration who sees him as plain criminal. ***
