LATEST REPORT ON UNIVERSITY AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MISSING AFTER BLOODY INCIDENT ON LAMPUNG UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, 19 MARCH 1998

There are clearer indications of human rights violations in the conflict between students and security forces on the UNILA (Lampung University) campus:
1. Violations involving people being arrested without due process of law, without information provided to families, denied access to legal counsel during interrogation. Five youths were arrested and interrogated by the military in an unidisclosed location (Lampung Regency Police and Bandar Lampung police say that these people are no longer in detention). Military Commander of Sriwijaya Military Region II, Maj. Gen. Suadi Atma, in Jambi (Tamtama, 23 March 98), stated that his forces have detained five non-students in the bloody incident of 19 March l998.

2. Violations involving torture at the time of arrest and during interrogation. Victims in fairly serious condition are:

-Firman, student, Faculty of Law, UNILA
-Faisol, student, Faculty of Engineering, UNILA
-Ridwan, student

Missing students:

2. Andi Gembul, youth
3. Ananda, B. youth/student (?)
4. Bahrul Alam, student
5. Hisbullah, student, Faculty of Engineering, UNILA
6. Hendri, youth/student (?)
7. Musa, worker.
8. Okiyanti, Faculty of Teacher Education, UNILA
9. Perwita Agus, student, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences
10. Sutikno, student
11. Ummy, Faculty of Teacher Education, UNILA
12. Utami, Faculty of Teacher Education, UNILA
13. Warso, Faculty of Teacher Education, UNILA
14. Wahyu Efendi, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, UNILA
15. Yudi, Faculty of Law, UNILA

Efforts to locate these missing students continue.

The Foundation for Legal Aid (YPBHI) has asked the National Human Rights Commision and other human rights institutions to take up urgent action to assist the efforts to find those who have disappeared.
