From: Pemerhati

This morning around 9.00 a.m. the PDI Headquarters at Jalan Diponegoro was attacked and taken over by Pro Surjadi supporters. THe battle started around 6.40 a.m. when pro-Surjadi supporters on 10 trucks dismounted in front of the headquarters. Stone throwing followed between the defenders which are pro -Megawati Sukarnoputri, the 1993-1998 chairman and the attackers. Sources noted that at least 2 truckload of attackers were suspected to be from the armed forces. The others does not seem to be that disciplined and forceful. However, when help for the pro-Megawati camp came, the police in full anti-riot gear stepped in. The people from the neighboring kampungs then got angry when the police just stood by blocking the street in front of the embattled headquarters. there were no effort by the police or the few army officers present to break-up the fight. They seem to be there to ensure that the attack was not disturbed.

An army officer even coordinated the attack. The people then started to throw stones and molotov bombs at the police, and it quickly grew into a riot. 2 public buses were put on fire. The riot quickly died down, and no further damage were reported. After the hq were taken over, the police stepped in and confiscated the office while taking over some documents.

Extent of causalties were not yet confirmed. In the streets surrounding the area, pro-democracy students aired their grief staging open-forums in thestreet.
